Insurance terms, in plain English.

Understand the broad structure of a policy before comparing two prices. Exact coverage depends on the insurer, policy wording and state rules.

Six building blocks

Know what each coverage does.

Liability coverage

Generally addresses your responsibility for bodily injury or property damage to others, subject to coverage limits and exclusions.

Collision coverage

May help pay for covered physical damage to your vehicle after collision or rollover, usually subject to a deductible.

Comprehensive coverage

May address covered noncollision physical damage such as theft, certain weather events or animal impacts, subject to policy terms.

Uninsured or underinsured motorist

May provide protection in certain circumstances involving an at-fault driver without adequate coverage. Details vary by state.

Medical payments / PIP

Different coverages that may help with certain accident-related medical expenses, where available or required.

Optional endorsements

Rental reimbursement, roadside assistance and other additions may be available on specific policies, subject to limits.

“Full coverage” is not a standardized policy.

Ask a licensed insurer or agent for the exact limits, deductibles, conditions and exclusions. Compare written quotes with the same selections whenever possible.
